Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd. has used a company parking lot for 1,200 cars, owned by its production subsidiary Okayama Murata Manufacturing (located in Setouchi City, Okayama Prefecture), to install one of Japan’s largest parking-lot-based mega solar systems.
In order for society to continue growing sustainably, efforts to combat climate change, are seen as essential. The Murata Manufacturing Group is working on conducting business in a way that regards “strengthening our response to climate change” as a central task. Through the installation of this solar panel system, Murata is contributing to a reduction in local CO2 emissions.
Instead of conventional panels that generate electricity only on the surface, Murata’s solar panel system uses double-sided panels that are photosensitive on the reverse side as well, improving the electricity generation ratio per installation area. This way, electricity can be generated not only from direct sunlight hitting the panel surface, but also from light reflected by parked cars and the ground onto the back. With this system it will be possible to generate enough electricity to compensate for the electricity use of more than 600 standard households each year, which will lead to a CO2 reduction of 1,698 tons.
Okayama Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd. is also planning the installation of additional double-sided solar panels in a parking lot for 500 cars in 2021. This is expected to increase the total system’s electricity generation by roughly 50% and further reduce CO2 emissions.
The Murata Manufacturing Group plans to keep promoting the use of renewable energy through the installation of solar power facilities at its domestic and overseas locations and will continue to implement efforts to combat climate change.
