Creating a Sustainable Supply Chain: Advancing Environmental and Societal Benefits with Hydrogen Fuel Cell Trucks (Part 2)

3. Leveraging innovation to lead by example in the electronics industry

Reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the logistics sector is a top priority for sales sites across Greater China. However, Murata recognizes that achieving this goal requires collaboration, as there are limits as to what can be accomplished independently. Support and cooperation from forwarders is essential in this effort. One day, MCI received a proposal from Yusen Logistics (China) Co., Ltd. ("Yusen Logistics") to adopt hydrogen fuel cell trucks.

Takazawa: "Hydrogen fuel cell trucks produce no CO2 emissions during operation or hydrogen production, aligning closely with Murata's priorities and the environmental policies of the Chinese government. Since hydrogen fuel cell trucks are still relatively rare in Greater China, their use also provides significant visibility. While there are costs associated with this approach, Murata's commitment to its slogan, 'Innovator in Electronics,' underscores the importance of addressing our environmental and social contributions. I believe that adopting hydrogen fuel cell trucks will position us as a leader for others to follow."

According to Mr. Takazawa, switching to hydrogen fuel cell trucks will have a significant impact on reducing GHG emissions.

Takazawa: "In addition to our collaboration with Yusen Logistics, MCI partnered with Jiangsu JD-Link International Logistics Co., Ltd. ('JD-LINK') on a project at our Wuxi plant. Currently, one Yusen Logistics hydrogen fuel cell truck operates daily between our Wuxi plant and the warehouse in Suzhou, while another JD-LINK hydrogen fuel cell truck delivers products from several suppliers in the Suzhou area to various plants. By calculating CO2 reductions based on travel distances and material volumes, we estimate that in the first phase, this initiative will reduce carbon emissions by nearly 50 tons* compared to conventional gasoline vehicles. Additionally, it will enable the use of over 2,518 tons of renewable energy annually for transport services to production sites in Wuxi."
*Calculated based on the volume transported along internal routes and fuel consumption per 100 kilometers.

4. The importance of expanding the conventional QCDS concept and driving the creation of new value

Murata's logo displayed on the back of hydrogen fuel cell trucks stands as a symbol of the company's commitment to building a sustainable future.

Takazawa: "Beyond reducing our environmental impact, initiatives like these are key for enhancing good will around our brand both internally and externally. That's why we chose to display Murata's logo on these hydrogen fuel cell trucks. One of the project's key objectives was to generate interest in both Murata and environmental sustainability by operating marked eco-friendly trucks throughout China. Additionally, communications opportunities like these in the logistics field are usually limited, even within our supply chain."

On May 6, 2024, MCI held a send-off ceremony for the hydrogen fuel cell truck at its Wuxi plant, with government officials and other key stakeholders in attendance. The event drew significant attention and received widespread media coverage.

Takazawa: "As an innovator in the electronics industry, setting an example is essential. I also believe there is significant value in actively promoting our initiatives within the logistics sector. This not only motivates employees at logistics sites but also creates a positive ripple effect across various areas. Our collaborations with Yusen Logistics and JD-LINK appear to have sparked interest from other companies in adopting hydrogen fuel cell trucks. It's deeply fulfilling to see our efforts to reduce environmental impact gaining momentum and making a meaningful contribution to both the environment and society."

Mr. Takazawa's experience in developing a green supply chain using hydrogen fuel cell trucks reaffirms the importance of embracing a growth mindset.

Takazawa: "Traditionally, the logistics field has operated on the principles of QCDS (Quality, Cost, Delivery, Service), which contribute to business growth. However, it's vital to include 'environment' and evolve this framework into QCDSE. Digital transformation (DX) also plays a key role in this evolution. Incorporating these factors can enhance awareness at logistics sites and inspire fresh ideas. For this reason, I am committed to further strengthening cross-functional collaboration within the company and focusing on creating new value and incorporating insight from external experts."
