Use of Sustainable Resources

We have set targets for each of our worksites and each of our departments, and we are working to reduce our waste volume and water usage based on the fiscal 2019 to 2021 mid-term targets.*1

Recently, we have been focusing our efforts on resource recycling, including the reuse of plastics and other materials in response to the issue of ocean plastic and Chinese import restrictions.

Waste management

Murata’s waste management processes are based on “compliance,” “control of the production of waste,” and “zero emissions” as fundamental principles.

Results Compared to Fiscal 2019 to 2021 Mid-Term Target

To achieve the fiscal 2019 to 2021 mid-term target (7% improvement in waste generated per unit of production in fiscal 2021 compared to the fiscal 2016 to 2018 average), in fiscal 2019 we set a one-year target of achieving volume of waste per unit of production below the previous year’s level. In fiscal 2018, intensity deteriorated at 24% increas compared to the fiscal 2016 to 2018 average, but in fiscal 2019, we took various reduction measures including introduction of in-house waste liquid treatment facilities and concentrating plating waste liquid, and as a result, we're successful in a significant improvement up 11% at the volume of waste per unit of production and we achieved the intensity target of less than the previous year’s level.

Going forward, we plan to achieve the fiscal 2019 to 2021 mid-term target by introducing in-house wastewater treatment facilities whose operation is currently being investigated, reducing the defect rate, and other measures

Measures to prepare for disasters

Murata engages waste treatment contractors to process and recycle the waste products generated by our production activities. In the unlikely event that one of our waste treatment contractors were to suffer damage as the result of a natural disaster, there is a risk that we would be unable to discharge our waste products and would be forced to suspend our production activities. In order to avoid this risk, we have secured multiple treatment routes to ensure that our production activities are unaffected.

Resource recycling initiatives

In recent years, there has been a growing need for initiatives to recycle plastic in response to restrictions on the import of waste in China and other Asian countries as well as environmental problems such as ocean pollution. Especially in Japan, the amount of waste that cannot be recycled and goes to landfills has increased rapidly due to China’s waste import restrictions. Given this situation, Murata regularly exchanges information with materials manufacturers and considers recycling methods that can produce higher quality raw materials than at present, in order to maintain “zero emissions.”

Water resource management

Murata is striving to realize efficient use of the water resources that we employ in our business activities. We are responding to water risks that affect our corporate activities.

Results Compared to Fiscal 2019 to 2021 Mid-Term Target

To achieve the fiscal 2019 to 2021 mid-term target (6% improvement in water usage per unit of production in fiscal 2021 compared to the fiscal 2016 to 2018 average), in fiscal 2019 we set a one-year target of achieving a 5% improvement compared to the fiscal 2016 to 2018 average. We took measures, such as recycling process wastewater for reuse as process cleaning water; however, the improvement was limited to 1% in average water usage per unit of production, and the target (5% improvement) was not achieved.

The causes were a delay in the start of operation of treatment facilities for the reuse of wastewater in production processes at the Toyama Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd., which had been planned for fiscal 2019, and infrastructure-related water usage (cooling water in cooling towers and so on) accounting for about half of the total, which resulted in water usage reduction measure effects not being reflected in usage per unit of production.

In fiscal 2020, we plan to review water usage reduction measure proposals for all sites in order to achieve the fiscal 2019 to 2021 mid-term target.

Responding to water risks

Using WRI Aqueduct*3 and WBCSD Global Water Tool*4, in addition to data published by the authorities and other sources, Murata has set its own evaluation standards and is using these in evaluating water risks (drought risk and flood risk).

We evaluated three levels of drought risk (high, medium, and low) for each of our worksites. Looking at the volume of water usage by individual evaluation, the results showed that 97% of our total water usage was in regions with low or medium risk, indicating that drought risk is low. We evaluated flood risk based on frequency of occurrence and degree of impact, and we found that none of our worksites is located in high-risk areas. Going forward, we will promote activities with an eye to setting CBWTs*5, which are water targets based on local characteristics and water catchment issues.

When we acquire new factory sites, we also study risks from perspectives including the availability of water resources and wastewater regulations.
