A message from the Director of the Corporate Technology & Business Development Unit

Since its founding, Murata has cherished the idea that “good electronic equipment comes from good electronic components, and good electronic components come from good materials.” Even as the times change, this idea has remained at the core of our technology development activities.

A pioneering spirit and unique values passed down by our predecessors

As described in the Murata Philosophy, “we contribute to the advancement of society by creating innovative products and solutions.” These words were born when our founder Akira Murata established the business based on guidance he received from his father. His commitment to and belief in uniqueness became one of the major driving forces behind the company’s subsequent growth and remains an important value that we cherish today.

This is not necessarily limited to technology development. Whenever we think about providing value to customers, it is important to clarify what differentiates us from other companies and ensure that we offer benefits to customers. I feel that the keyword “uniqueness” serves as a trigger for strengthening this awareness and is extremely effective when coupled with the strong understanding of the Murata Philosophy that exists within the company.

This concept is repeatedly re-examined during the conceptual stage of technology development themes and at key decision-making points, and it is precisely such questioning that serves as the driving force for producing superior output.

Unique technologies created by challenge

Since its founding, Murata has responded to complex and highly difficult requirements that other companies in the same industry cannot handle to achieve a high level of recognition in the industry. At the same time, this reputation has broadened our opportunities for exchanges with academia.

One iconic anecdote is Murata’s encounter with Professor Tetsuro Tanaka of Kyoto University, a researcher who was studying barium titanate, which was a cutting-edge dielectric material at the time. This material laid the foundation for the development of Murata's mainstay ceramic capacitor business and led to products that are now supplied for use in electrical appliances all over the world.

Because our management culture considers things from a long-term perspective, development projects that do not immediately produce results are tolerated to a certain degree. Our ability to tackle challenges in areas that may be difficult for other companies to take on is precisely due to this culture and is what supports the “uniqueness” of our technologies.

Envisioning a prosperous society beyond technology

Our philosophy that has been passed down since our founding has become further refined with the passing of time and is deeply rooted in the corporate culture of Murata.

We must not simply pursue technology but always consider it from the perspective of how it can solve societal and customer problems and contribute to cultural development.

It is precisely this perspective that goes beyond the simple pursuit of technology and enables the creation of true value.

The integrated technology platform at the core of Murata’s strength

Integrating diverse technologies

Murata’s strength lies in having an in-house, integrated technical platform that spans materials technology, device design, and manufacturing technology.

As the saying goes, “necessity is the mother of invention,” and in our case, “good electronic equipment comes from good electronic components, and good electronic components come from good materials.” Thinking deeply about this idea led us to vertical integration and the construction of an integrated production system.

Our vertically integrated technology platform ensures advanced quality control and reliability going back to the source and enables a stable product supply. In addition, it has become the driving force behind the creation of new forms of value and the development of advanced products through the integration of various technical fields.

While our approach may not be universally applicable, it was undoubtedly a good choice for the field of electronic components. This unique system is precisely the reason why we can deliver our products with confidence.
