Eco-Friendly Multistory Parking Garage Highlights Wuxi Murata Electronics' Climate Change Initiatives(Part 1)

Wuxi Murata Electronics, a manufacturing subsidiary of Murata Manufacturing based in Jiangsu Province, China, was founded in 1995 and is set to celebrate its 30th anniversary in 2025. The Murata Group identified "realizing a decarbonized society" as a key priority and is working toward achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. This includes reducing greenhouse gas emissions through comprehensive energy-saving initiatives and expanding the use of renewable energy. As part of this commitment, Wuxi Murata Electronics is actively implementing climate change countermeasures. We spoke with Deputy Manager Chen to learn more about these efforts, particularly the environmentally friendly multistory parking garage completed in May 2022, which has garnered considerable attention for its innovative design and sustainability features.

1. Created a specialized team to accelerate climate change initiatives

Deputy Manager Chen, who leads climate change initiatives at Wuxi Murata Electronics, explains the background behind these efforts.

Chen: “Murata has committed to achieving RE100 and carbon neutrality, and Wuxi Murata Electronics shares this vision, actively working on climate change initiatives. On that, the Chinese government established the '30・60 Goal,' aiming to peak CO2 emissions by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2060. To support this goal, China is accelerating the development of renewable energy infrastructure that moves away from fossil fuel dependency. As part of these efforts, Wuxi Murata Electronics implemented a range of climate change measures to meet the Chinese government's requirements while simultaneously supporting Murata Group's policies.”

Wuxi Murata Electronics is working on a wide array of climate change initiatives, including energy conservation, the promotion of renewable energy, energy visualization, and the adoption of solar power generation. Beginning in January 2025, the company will transition to sourcing 100% of its electricity from renewable energy.

Chen: “To drive these initiatives, we formed a dedicated team focused on climate change action. This team consists of several dozen key members from the Environment and Safety Department as well as various manufacturing departments. Together, they lead efforts in energy conservation, carbon neutrality, and renewable energy adoption, including the installation of solar panels optimized for available space.”

2. Impacting society by turning climate change initiatives into tangible actions

Deputy Manager Chen highlights that, among the many initiatives, the promotion of heat-resistant ceramic catalyst materials for exhaust treatment has earned high praise from the Chinese government and other stakeholders.

Chen: “Murata Manufacturing was the first in the world to apply ceramic capacitor material design technology to develop these innovative materials. At Wuxi Murata Electronics, we faced challenges with high fuel consumption due to the higher temperature settings of the combustion chamber in our regenerative thermal oxidizer (RTO), a heat-storing exhaust treatment system. To tackle this, we integrated a honeycomb catalyst made from heat-resistant ceramic catalyst material into the RTO, successfully lowering the combustion chamber temperature and reducing fuel consumption by 38.2 percent. We are now sharing this technology with other companies to further contribute to reducing fossil fuel usage across society.”

Through its various initiatives, the Murata Group is strengthening its position in China as a leader in climate change solutions.

Chen: “While it's easy to discuss climate change countermeasures, putting them into action requires significant financial and human resources, which is why few companies have taken meaningful steps. Despite these challenges, Wuxi Murata Electronics has actively pursued energy conservation, renewable energy adoption, and fossil fuel reduction at our plants, setting examples for others to follow. We are proud of the impact we've made on society and the high expectations placed on us by government agencies. One standout example is the environmentally friendly multistory parking garage completed in May 2022, which has gained significant attention.”

In Part 2, we will explain the process of constructing the environmentally friendly multistory parking garage as well as its features and key attributes.
