Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd. (hereinafter, “Murata”) has been selected as an A-list*1 company, the highest rating in the "Climate Change" survey conducted by CDP, an international environmental non-profit organization. This is an evaluation given to companies that lead the world in terms of setting targets, initiatives, and information disclosure in climate change countermeasures. We have received the Leadership Level evaluation in the same survey for four consecutive years since fiscal 2021, and this time we have received the highest evaluation for the second consecutive year.
*1 The evaluation results are rated on an 8-point scale, from the highest: Leadership level (A and A-), Management level (B and B-), Awareness level (C and C-), and Disclosure level (D and D-).
Murata’s Targets and Achievements regarding Climate Change
We have been working on reducing the environmental impact of our manufacturing activities and have selected "Reinforcement of climate change countermeasures" as a key issue (materiality) in our Mid-term Direction 2024 and have set management targets.
In the latest result from 2023 fiscal, Murata Group succeeded in sourcing 37% of its electricity from renewable energy, in reducing Scope 1 and 2 GHG*2 emissions by 35% compared to FY2019. We overachieved the Mid-Term Direction 2024 targets, 25% renewable energy sourcing and 20% Scope1 and 2 GHG reduction, one year ahead of schedule, respectively. We also made good progress in Scope 3 initiatives and achieved an 18% reduction in GHG emissions compared to FY2019.
In September 2024, we decided to bring forward our target date for achieving RE100*3 by 15 years, from FY2050 to FY2035. We have also set new carbon neutrality targets, aiming to achieve Scope 1 and 2 carbon neutrality by FY2040 and Scope 3 by FY2050, in parallel to RE100 target acceleration.
*2 GHG: Greenhouse gas
*3 RE100: the global corporate renewable energy initiative bringing together hundreds of large and ambitious businesses committed to 100% renewable electricity sourcing in their business operation
In our latest Mid-Term Direction 2027, announced in November 2024, we selected “Realization of decarbonized society” as one of our key issues, and we will further accelerate our efforts.
Murata’s Climate Change Initiatives
We are implementing a variety of measures to expand renewable energy sourcing, including the building and introduction of our own renewable energy control solution that enables the effective and efficient use of solar power and storage batteries, as well as the conclusion of corporate PPA contracts. In addition to conventional energy saving measures centered on capital investment, we are also encouraging new energy saving measures utilizing internal programs such as the Internal Carbon Pricing (ICP) system and the Sustainability Investment Promotion program. Furthermore, we are also working to optimize energy use in production process by introducing a monitoring system that uses our own wireless sensors.
In terms of Scope3 emissions, we are strengthening cooperation with our customers, suppliers, logistics companies and others to push climate change measures throughout the supply chain and are studying full-scale reduction proposals. We are focusing on building relationships with our suppliers to reduce GHG emissions from purchased products and services, accelerating the use of primary data while sharing our expertise in energy saving and renewable energy to build a sustainable supply chain. We are also encouraging modal shifting, proactive use of transportation methods with low environmental impact, such as trains and ships, for instance.
In addition, Murata is conducting in-depth analysis of opportunities and risks in transition scenarios based on the TCFD *4 and discloses related information including governance and strategy.
*4 Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures
We believe that these efforts have been highly evaluated, resulting in the A list selection.
We will continue to create a virtuous cycle of economic and social value through our unique products and technologies and contribute to reducing the environmental impact of society as a whole and solving social issues.
