Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd. (hereafter: Murata) has joined the global environmental initiative RE100* which is aiming for the use of 100% renewable energy to cover the electricity used in business operations. By reaching a renewable energy use ratio of 100% by 2050, Murata will contribute to the realization of a more sustainable society.

Murata’s participation in RE100 is achieved with the support of the Japan Climate Leaders’ Partnership (JCLP), industrial group which strives to realize a sustainable carbon-neutral society.

*RE100 is a global initiative bringing together the world’s most influential businesses committed to 100% renewable power. Led by international non-profit the Climate Group in partnership with CDP, the group have a total revenue of over US$6.6 trillion and operate in a diverse range of sectors. Together, they send a powerful signal to policymakers and investors to accelerate the transition to a clean economy.

To contribute to solving global societal issues, the Murata Group strategy is to strengthen responses to climate change as one of its concrete measures. To this end, Murata is implementing efforts to promote the introduction of renewable energy. Specifically, Murata is managing its business in a way that will accomplish its total greenhouse gas reduction targets across the entire Group and is proactively investing in advancing energy savings and the use of renewable energy in our facilities.

Electronic components such as multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCC), Murata’s core product, require sustained high temperatures during the firing process and use a lot of electricity. Due to spatial limitations of the number of capacitors that can be fired at once, Murata is making an effort to further miniaturize our MLCC’s and reduce the environmental burden, including electricity and material use during the firing process.

In addition to such reductions of the environmental burden during the production process, Murata is aiming to promote the use of renewable energy at its production subsidiaries in Japan and outside of Japan. Solar panels have already been installed at more than 10 locations and Murata has made other large investments in 2020 as well. Murata introduced Japan’s largest mega solar system using a parking lot for 1,200 vehicles at Okayama Murata Manufacturing in March and is planning on maximizing the use of electricity at this location by combining the solar system with Murata storage batteries to enable full use of the electricity generated. Additionally, Murata Electronics (Thailand), Ltd. has also been operating the Murata Group’s largest mega solar system, using the roofs of six buildings, since August.

By engaging in various strategies such as promoting the introduction of renewable energy, Murata is contributing to the realization of a carbon-neutral society.

Murata Manufacturing President Norio Nakajima gave the following statement:
“As a comprehensive electronic parts maker, Murata Manufacturing has been actively engaged in the development and provision of products that recognize the importance of reducing our environmental impact. Although the environmental impact of each individual electronic component is small, the number of components used is growing dramatically due to the increasingly high functionality of final products such as electronic devices and automobiles.
In particular, Murata Manufacturing has been managing its business in accordance with its core policies based on the societal issue of improving our response to climate change and has been proactively engaged in efforts to boost energy savings and renewable energy at its locations. By participating in RE100 and utilizing Murata’s products and systems, we will accelerate our response to climate change and continue to contribute to the realization of a sustainable society.”

Sam Kimmins (Head of RE100, The Climate Group) gave the following statement:
“I am delighted to welcome Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd to RE100. By committing to 100% renewable electricity by 2050, Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd is joining a fast-growing group of Japanese companies committed to driving market change. This is fantastic leadership and sends a powerful message that renewable electricity makes good business sense. ”
