Murata’s basic policy concerning activities that contribute to society and local communities

Murata aspires to be a company whose presence in local communities is a source of pride and joy to those communities. Making effective use of its resources (employees, expertise, facilities, and funds), Murata works consistently to contribute to society and to the local communities with which we are involved.

Working toward the realization of harmony among people, organizations, and society

Murata has long worked to build relationships of trust with members of local communities while gaining understanding of our business and actions. This has become an important asset, and we are grateful to have been able to continue our business activities until now. Under the Mid-term Direction 2021, we have been taking action towards achieving harmony among people, organizations, and society as one issue for securing sound growth. By continuously engaging in activities that lead to solutions to the problems of the communities where we conduct business, we are contributing to the development of a sustainable society.

Specifically, we will undertake initiatives that contribute to society and local communities with even greater emphasis on forging ties with a wide range of stakeholders including local residents while focusing on support for the development of future generations, community support, environmental preservation, technical support, and cultural support.

Murata’s engineers support our activities as a manufacturing company, and in order to communicate an understanding of the work that engineers perform and the attractiveness of their role to young people, Murata holds science classes and lectures on demand for elementary and middle school students, both in Japan and in other countries including the US, China, Singapore, and Malaysia. Across the globe, we have been introducing Murata Seisaku Kun®, a bicycle-riding robot created by Murata, conducting electronics workshops, holding environmental courses to raise interest in environmental preservation, conducting career development, and continuously conducting visiting lectures tailored to local needs. In fiscal 2019, 108 such visiting lectures were conducted in Japan and 21 were conducted by our regional offices In addition, 124 plant tours, work experience programs, and other such programs were implemented in Japan, and 16 took place outside of Japan. These activities will be ongoing as we seek to realize our goal of being a company that inspires dreams and aspirations in the children who will forge our future.

FY2019 Example: ABC (Always Be Clean) Program, Philippine Manufacturing Co. of Murata, Inc.

The Philippine Manufacturing Co. of Murata, Inc. conducted an on-site course at Santa Teresita Elementary School with the aim of improving student health through appropriate hygiene management. The course included instruction on the importance of hygiene and proper handwashing techniques., Hygiene kits that included a towel, soap, nail clipper, and sanitizer were distributed.

Murata Electronics (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd. conducted visiting lectures for grade 5 and 6 primary school students at two schools in the state of Perak.

FY2019 Example: Commencement of experiential programming visiting lectures

Since fiscal 2006, Murata has conducted visiting lectures for children for the purpose of sharing the appeal of working as an engineer that supports manufacturing.

Furthermore, an experimental programming visiting lecture was launched in fiscal 2019 to provide students with programming-type (i.e., logical) thinking skills, which is one of the objectives of the elementary school educational guidelines. The program was conducted at a total of eight elementary schools in Tokyo, Kyoto, Shimane, and Okayama, with 411 students participating. In the future, we plan to steadily expand theseinitiatives undertaken in cooperation with educational institutions in Japan.

Greenification activities that harmonize with culture and nature

Murata has formulated a Green Basic Policy that establishes the creation, maintenance, and development of “cultural environments” as one of our corporate social responsibilities. Based on this policy, we are conducting greenification activities at each of our worksites that harmonize with the culture and nature of the local region. Every season, we open our workplaces and welcome visits from local residents. In fiscal 2019 we opened up our worksites a total of 36 times.

In addition, with support from local residents, we are also working to conserve ecosystems through initiatives such as “Murata Forest” activities, in which our employees are involved in forest conservation efforts. In fiscal 2019, we conducted 39 such activities

As a result of these ongoing measures, Hakui Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd. was awarded the fiscal 2019 Japan Greenery Research and Development Center Chairman’s award for plant greenification, the 14th Murata Group factory in Japan to win an award for these activities.

Activities to support local communities

Murata provides support for local communities that fits their specific needs and characteristics.

In China and Southeast Asia, our activities include donating to institutions such as nursing homes and orphanages and providing scholarships to schools that train engineers. In Britain, we are involved in food drives, and in the US, toy drives. We raise rhododendrons at our Yasu and Yokkaichi worksites, roses at Fukui Murata Manufacturing and Komatsu Murata Manufacturing, and cherry trees and azaleas at other bases. When the plants and trees that we cultivate are flowering, we open our facilities to visits from the public, and large numbers of local residents come to enjoy them.

We are also engaged in ongoing support activities that involve us in the local community at other bases, including community cleanup activities and blood donation.

In addition to these, when major disasters occur, we support the community through activities such as providing donations to assist in the recovery of the region and help everyone affected by the disaster.

FY 2019 Example: Murata Makeover Mob—Participation in a children’s activity center renovation project, Murata Electronics Europe B.V. UK Branch

Sponsored by the Starburst Foundation, the musical academy’s objectiveis to provide rich experiences through dance, singing, and acting to children with few opportunities to experience the arts because of their domestic circumstances.

FY2018 Example: Multicultural support at Izumo Murata Manufacturing

At present, there are 4,698 non-Japanese people living in Izumo City (a 2.4-fold increase over five years) partly due to an increasing number of, for example, Brazilian workers of Japanese descent at Izumo in recent years. We donated equipment such as student desks, chairs, and printers to the Intensive Basic Japanese Classes held by the Izumo Board of Education in order to support the Japanese language education of the children of these workers.

Academic support activities

The Murata Science Foundation was established in 1985, based on our desire to serve the advancement of science and technology through the promotion of academic research. The Foundation provides financial aid for research that contributes to the improvement and development of science and technology and research in the humanities and social sciences that contributes to the resolutions of a variety of issues. It also promotes international exchange among researchers. Also, in fiscal 2017, we commenced grants for universities outside of Japan.

In fiscal 2019, the Murata Science Foundation provided a total of ¥360 million in Japan in the form of 141 research project grants, 35 study group grants, and 94 overseas dispatch assistance grants, as well as ¥10 million outside of Japan in the form of 20 research grants. Since its establishment, the foundation has provided a total of ¥3.90 billion in grant aid.

Cultural Support

The arts and culture enrich people’s lives by providing inspiration and joy, while sports culture supports physical and mental development. We believe that all these activities are key aspects of contributing to the development of society.

Since 1992, the Murata has been a special sponsor of and supports the Wakaba Cup All Japan Pupils’ Team Championships, which is held in Nagaoka City, Kyoto, the location of Murata’s headquarters. . In 2008, Murata became a special sponsor of the Kyoto High School Comprehensive Culture Festival Winners Presentation Ceremony and established the Murata Manufacturing Award, in support of high school students active at the highest levels in each field. Each autumn, Okayama Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd. holds a soccer clinic for elementary school students that is taught by leading members of the local professional soccer team.
