Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd.
President: Norio Nakajima
Kanazu Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd. (located in Awara, Fukui Prefecture; hereinafter "Kanazu Murata Manufacturing"), a manufacturing affiliate of Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd. (hereinafter "Murata Manufacturing"), has installed the largest storage battery system at the Hokuriku region (hereinafter "the system") plant to enable 100 percent renewable energy beginning November 1. The Murata Manufacturing Group is converting all electricity consumed in the group's business activities into renewable energy to meet the goals of the RE100 global environmental initiative*.
* RE100 is a global initiative that brings together the world’s most influential businesses that have committed to 100 percent renewable power. Led by international non-profit The Climate Group in partnership with CDP the group has a total revenue of over US$6.6 trillion and operates in a diverse range of sectors. Together, they send a powerful signal to policymakers and investors to accelerate the transition to a clean economy.
Contributing to social infrastructure by reducing the burden on the power supply network
In recent years, the effects of climate change, such as rising sea levels and temperatures, as well as dramatic weather patterns, have become far more prevalent. As a result, it is increasingly difficult to predict the supply and demand of electricity in Japan, especially during the summer and winter. This puts a significant strain on the supply network. To resolve this, it is important for us to work towards the realization of a sustainable society at a company level by implementing renewable energy and optimizing energy management. Using the system will reduce the burden on the power supply network and contribute to the goal of reducing CO2 emissions.
Benefits of installing the system
The system combines a large-scale solar panel array and storage unit with a proprietary energy management system this is capable of optimizing energy consumption in real time. It does so by managing data on production schedules, electricity consumption, weather forecasts, and power generation forecasts. For example, during the daytime when solar power generation is at its peak, the power grid load is reduced by using plant-generated power, At the same time, fluctuations in manufacturing output and weather conditions are closely monitored to increase efficiency. At night, the storage battery is recharged in preparation for the daytime power demand, which also helps stabilize the power grid load. It is expected that the system will reduce CO2 emissions by an estimated 368 tons per year.
The Murata Manufacturing Group is committed to promoting the use of renewable energy at its domestic and overseas locations to combat climate change.
Norio Nakajima, president of Murata Manufacturing, stated:
"In today's society, there is a great emphasis on leveraging corporate social responsibility to mitigate climate change issues. We must do everything we can to reduce our environmental footprint that results from the manufacturing process. The system we are using consists of a power storage unit that utilizes the strength of Murata Manufacturing's rechargeable battery technology, enabling it to operate stably over a long period. Using Kanazu Murata Manufacturing as a 100 percent renewable energy model, we will implement similar measures at various Murata plants in an effort to achieve a more sustainable society."
